Award of the responsible company: Skans and Vanni
Skans: Skans was selected for its minimalist approach aimed at slowing down the consumption of eyewear: timeless frames that are only launched when new to reduce the need for renewals, timeless packaging (often without print) to limit the need for restyling, the availability of identical spare parts for all models or production on demand to avoid overstocking. The company also demonstrated an approach that takes into account the entire life cycle of the frames, which, for example, are made from a single material (100% stainless steel, including the nose pads) to maximise recycling, easy transport and one-handed operation.
Vanni: As the first Italian company in the eyewear industry to be recognised as a ‘Società Benefit’ (the Italian equivalent of ‘Company with a Mission’) in 2021, Vanni has proven that it is able to monitor its social, environmental and societal CSR performance based on figures and best practices. The company even goes so far as to have its employees evaluate its performance in various areas (via a survey). 100% of Vanni employees have participated in training modules on sustainable development (between 5 and 22 hours per employee).
In 2023/2024, the company carried out an internal reorganisation, accompanied by an organisational psychologist, to more clearly define the tasks and responsibilities of each employee and to respond to the needs of employees. Vanni has particularly strong roots in the region and supports numerous local organisations in Turin and Piedmont. A life cycle assessment based on the cradle-to-gate principle has also enabled the company to make a number of adjustments to limit the environmental impact of its products.
