Safilo plans to close its Slovenian production site in Ormož from June 2021, affecting 557 employees there as part of the realignment of the group’s industrial capacity to current and future production needs.
This closure, which will affect approximately 10 per cent of the total workforce (5,754 employees as of 2019), follows the Safilo Group 2020 actions in Italy, with the closure of the Martignacco site and the restructuring of the Longarone site, which is still ongoing. In addition to the three sites in Italy, the group still produces in Salt Lake City in the USA and Suzhou in China.

Optimising Safilo production sites
The situation of the Ormož site had developed so badly because of the reduction in volumes – due to the termination of licensing contracts for major brands as well as the increasing trend towards acetate products, “which was exacerbated by the Covid 19 pandemic and led to structural imbalances that are not sustainable for the next few years”. In addition, the closure is in line with the group’s business objectives to optimise and improve the efficiency of its production sites, it said.
The Safilo Group confirms the opening of a discussion table with the trade unions and institutions to find all possible solutions to mitigate the social impact of this closure.
